The Sinner's Prayer

The Sinner's Prayer is a reference to any prayer that is used in a gospel presentation in which the preacher or evangelist claims that simply repeating said prayer will result in the sinner being made right with God and having eternal life.

A prayer is not going to save us unless the prayer is an expression of our faith. One must believe the gospel; one must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ in order to possess eternal life. However, someone just simply repeating the words of a prayer, and yet does not really believe, or does not believe the right gospel, then that person is not saved from hell.

This is not to say that one should not be instructed to pray to God for mercy and salvation, nor given a example prayer, but rather that the emphasis should not be upon repeating certain words to bring about a conversion, but upon faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation and so prayer in reality is an expression of such faith.
